What´s de 5 de Mayo All ABout?

Cinco de Mayo is Coming!!!

Are you ready to dust off the blender and whip up those margaritas?

Because Cinco de Mayo is upon us, take advantage of the holiday to enjoy a Mexican celebration of epic proportions.

But let`s talk about the food! This holiday is famous for the huge variety of Mexican dishes.

There are many recipes about Mexican food but if you are like me (a bad cooker), It`s obvious that you are going to spent this awesome holiday in a Mexican restaurant with your friends (from my experience it`s the best option!!)But do you know what kind of dishes are you going to order? Remember that Cinco de Mayo is more than Tacos and Nachos with refried beans. In fact, this holiday celebrates the Mexican victory over France at the battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862. Puebla is actually one of Mexico`s best foods cities, and its delicacies should be more widespread, especially on its most notable holiday. So, that`s why I want to share with you these 10 must-try dishes:

1. Chimichanga
This deep-fried burrito is so popular in the Southwestern U.S. cuisine and the Mexican states of Sinaloa and Sonora. The dish is typically prepared by filling flour tortilla with rice, cheese, machaca, shredded chicken, and folding it into a rectangular package.

2. Tamales Oaxaqueños

Tamales is a traditional Mesoamerican dish made of “masa” (a starchy dough, usually corn-based), which is steamed in a corn husk or banana leaf. The wrapping is discarded before eating and it can be filled with meats, cheese, fruits a vegetables. The difference with Tamales Oxaqueños is that it`s filled with mole negro and chicken.

3. Guacamole

Did you know that “Guacamole” was first created by Aztecs in what is now Mexico? It can informally be referred to as “guac” in North America and this delicious salad ingredient and dip is made of avocado, tomato, onion, garlic, and additional seasonings.

4. Tacos al Pastor

Also know as Al Pastor, is likely as a result of the adoption of the shawarma spit-grilled meat brought by the Lebanese immigrants to Mexico. Pork is marinated in a combination of dried chilies, spices and pineapple. In some places, achiote is also added, and then slowly cooked with a gas flame on a vertical rotisserie called a “trompo” with a piece of fresh onion and a pineapple on top.

5. Chicken and Steak Quesadillas

Nine out of ten armchair quarterbacks agree! This savory, meaty snack is delicious and sure to saves your big game party… no matter who wins! It`s filled with cheese, a savory mixture, vegetables, chicken, steak, often cooked on a griddle, then folded in half to form half-moon shape.

6. Taquitos Dorados

It consists of a small rolled-up tortilla and some type of filling, including beef, cheese or chicken. The dish is often topped with condiments such as sour cream and guacamole.

7. Churros Mexicanos

This hot Mexican doughnut is of my favorite Mexican desserts, It`s dusted with sugar and cinnamon , served with Oaxacan chocolate, passion fruit, marshmallow and ice cream.

8. Croquetas Poblanas

These are the favorites of the family and especially for the youngest ones. It`s made with Poblano peppers combined with Chihuahua cheese, ham and potato to make the perfect crunchy croquette.

9. Elote D.F

Elote or corn on the cob is a popular food in Mexico. It is customarily consumed on a stick, or by grasping the husk of the cob that has been pulled down to form a “handle”. Condiments such as salt, chili powder, butter, cheese, sour cream, and lemon juice are usually added to the elote.

10.  De Carnitas

It means literally “little meats”, is a dish originated from the state of Michoacán. It`s made by braising or simmering pork in oil or preferably lard until tender. It`s typically served with chopped cilantro leaves and diced onion, salsa, guacamole, tortillas, and refried beans.

This holiday is famous for the huge variety of Mexican dishes.
